Today the International Office of the Turku School of Economics invited all exchange students for a get together between 12h and 14:00h. Munkki (Berliner) and sima (mead) was served and in the end there was a lottery and a group photo was taken.

This night we went to practice Finnish numbers … How? Well, playing Bingo at a bar Besides the bar being a rather nice place to visit, they have Bingo every Tuesday. We’ve been told by others that they go every once in a while, but we couldn’t make it to any of those occasions yet. This night we went with our ‘intercultural communication” group (our team from one of our courses). You get one Bingo sheet for every drink. Gotta be careful though … apple cider is about EUR 5 …

The sheet has 3 squares with 25 numbers each. A woman draws random numbers from a tombola one after the other until someone has a bingo. There are prices to win that range from sweets to plastic race cars First round is one horizontal row, second is two, etc. Getting a full square is pretty hard.

We got not a single Bingo right, but we had fun anyway So maybe it will soon be us and Bingo again.

The shrove Tuesday (in Germany Aschermittwoch) is called laskiainen in Finnish. On this day Finns also celebrate some sort of carnival, just different. On this day, it is special to eat laskiaispulla. It is a sweet bun with cream and jam. But besides this, there were several winter ‘sports’ events today. We first went to FASTlaskiainen. At on one of the hills in the city, all the different student unions here competed in sledding. But not with normal sleds, no… they tried to build their own cool sleds. This was really funny to see, even though most of them had problems going down the hill completely

In the afternoon we drove to Hirvensalo, an island just 5 km from town. They have a small hill which has two different slopes. People competed there in making stunts with skis and snowboards. That was really nice to watch. Beside there was a place where we could go sledding. Real fun I can say!

Hi all,

our first day of lectures at the university startet at 8.30 am this morning. Timo, our teacher for the course “Management of ICT Services” started with an introduction and shocked us by saying a different time for the lectures on Tuesday. On his papers he had different information and told us, that the right one would be 8 to 12, so the same time we would have “Business Marketing”. So the day started perfect for us :(. Happily we went to the professor after the session and clarified, that we had the right time and he was wrong. So we can do both courses now

The second course we had today was Finnish for Foreigners, beginners course 1. I really can say now, that Finnish is a weird language. The teacher is nice, but I think she will become desperate with all of us.
