At the main street which leads to the student village there is Posankka sitting in the grass, the pink mascot of the housing association which is supposed to be a mix between a duck and a pig even though we don’t know where to find the duck parts :). In anticipation of Vappu (we will explain it later) which is on the 1st of May he today got his student cap. After that the Ikituuri had open doors. Ikituuri is a new building here in the student village. It is a very high tower with a round shape. From the top we had a really nice view over Turku and the student village. We got a patch for our overalls, a balloon and had some juice there.

This night we had the second floor dinner since we are here. So again everyone of the floor prepared some food to share with the others. It worked perfectly and we had a range of realy nice and tasty things to try. See what we had:

This evening we had a different kind of class meeting. For one of our university lectures we were supposed to meet with the people from our group (we, 2 Fins and one Austrian girl) and so something Finnish together. So we just had dinner together. We had a salad, carnelian pie with egg butter and German wine. And for dessert we had a great apple pie with ice cream. That was really tasty. But beside the meal it was a really nice evening and we talked a lot about Finland, Germany, studying etc.

Tonight we had a nice happening in our kitchen. Everyone of the twelve people from the ground floor was asked to bring some food and something to drink for a nice evening together. Almost everybody came and we had a delicious meal. There was Polish soup with eggs and sausages, English fish and chips, French field garlic pie, Spanish omelet, German lemonade cake, Italian tirmisu, Finnish hot wine, Polish vodka and Italian Montenegro, etc.

After a great information session of the student housing foundation (could have done this half an hour thing in about 5 minutes), where we didn’t really get any new information, we met with around 13 people in another kitchen. The two Italian guys had bought a lot of stuff to bake some pizza for us. We are not very sure whether they had done this before, but after some chaos it turned out very yummy. That was a nice thing to do and everybody stayed the whole 5 hrs until we went to the Welcome Party of all three universities of Turku (University of Turku, Abo Akademi, University of Applied Sciences).

Today we had our first orientation day. This is organized by the university to welcome and introduce all exchange students to the University of Turku. There were many presentations, a first nice experience with the cafeterias, and free tea and coffee. After the official tutor (Krista) showed us and her other adopted exchange students how to get to the city center. There we bought bus tickets for the next month. In the evening we had a nice evening at a bar just across street from our place with students from Finland, Italy, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, the U.S.A., and Germany (us ).

We have finally arrived in Turku. Johannes’ tutor picked us up at the ferry terminal so we didn’t have to carry our bags too far. This way we did not have to worry about where to go either. The only problem at the student village was that she had lost Verena’s key to the apartment, so we had to wait for the security guy who brought a new one. The rooms are still a little cold-looking, but the curtains and the bedding help a lot to make it look a bit more pretty. Right now we think it’s a good place to stay for the next 5 months.
