Tallinn

We are just back from our little Tallinn trip with 10 other ERASMUS students. From Turku we went to Helsinki by train on Friday and then took the ferry to Tallinn (Estonia). We were at the hostel somewhat late, but got a very good recommendation to have dinner at a place called “Hell Hunt”.

The next day we did a lot of sightseeing. As our hostel (it’s quite cheap, but nothing to recommend) was in the old part of the town we didn’t have very far to go. But besides that the old part is really small. Everything is so close that you can easily do it in a day. However, it is just beautiful to discover and one has a great feeling of history as the city really is old. In fact, the old town is UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site. We made our way to several outlooks, walked through (almost) each street of the old town and also visited the palace that’s a little bit further away. On the way back from the palace we had an interesting bus drive that took us about 3 km too far so we had to go back taking anotherone. But we still made it in time to see the “Fire and Ice” event (part of the Tallinn 2011 programme) just outside the town walls of the European Capital of Culture 2011 (together with Turku). It was pretty cold as it had been only -6°C over the day and it was snowing a lot. After a short stop at the hostel we had a very nice dinner at an Estonian restaurant called AED. The meals we got were pretty stylish looking and very tasty, but fortunately the prices were pretty moderate 🙂

Finally, today we had a nice breakfast at the “Peppersack” (note the seemingly strong German influence right there 😉 ) that was rather a lunch or brunch. Verena had an Estonian breakfast (pork loins, potatoes witch eggs, salad, bread, yoghurt and tomato dip, cake and liquor) and Johannes had an English one (french fries, baked beans, salad, eggs, bread and ham). That was pretty neat. At about one o’clock we took the ferry back to Helsinki and finally arrived at our home in Turku at about 8.30 pm.
